Jack's Magic is Westland's original all-purpose blend and still the one many gardeners buy on reputation alone. Westland describe it as a natural blend enriched with seaweed, carrying their West+2 formula for moisture retention, in a 50 litre bag intended to cover everything from seed sowing to potting on to beds and borders.

The seaweed is the part worth knowing about: Westland credit the extract with improving germination and root development and with lifting the quality of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The nutrition in the bag carries plants through roughly the first four to five weeks of growth, after which they need feeding.

How to Use

• Rework the compost between your hands before use so it regains its intended structure.
• Seed sowing: fill and water the tray, sow to the packet instructions, cover lightly and keep out of direct sun.
• Pots and baskets: knock the plant out, shake loose compost off, set it in the new container, fill the gaps and water in.
• Beds and borders: dig a hole twice the depth and diameter of the roots, backfill with compost, firm and water.
• Begin liquid feeding after four to five weeks.
• Reseal the bag and store it dry and frost-free.
