Woof Wear Medical Hoof Boot – Navy, Size 7

This is a veterinary boot rather than a riding one. Woof Wear describe the Medical Hoof Boot as being for stress-free poulticing and hoof care — holding a poultice or a dressing on an abscessed or wounded foot, and keeping that foot clean and dry in the stable or out in the paddock. It replaces the nappy-and-tape arrangement most of us have improvised at two in the morning.

The body is super-stretch neoprene, so it pulls on over a dressed foot and grips the pastern, with a Kevlar inner sole and a non-slip rubber outsole underneath. Size 7 fits a hoof of 140–148mm across and 157–167mm long, measured at the widest and longest points of the bearing surface. Boots are sold singly, so you buy one for the foot that needs it.

• Measure before buying. If the foot falls between sizes, the size 6 covers 131–139mm wide and the size 8 covers 149–157mm — Woof Wear ask for a snug fit to avoid slippage, so go to the size that fits closely rather than the roomier one.
• Not a hoof boot for riding a barefoot horse out on stony ground. This is a medical boot; a purpose-made riding hoof boot is a different product.

How to Use

• Measure the hoof at its widest point and its longest point, in millimetres, and match those to the size before ordering.
• Apply the poultice or dressing first, then work the stretch neoprene upper over the foot and up the pastern.
• Close the fastening so the boot cannot rotate or work down, but not so tight that it constricts the pastern.
• Woof Wear specify that a deep, robust overreach boot must be worn over the top to protect the boot — they recommend their own Ultra Overreach Boot, which we stock.
• Machine wash at a maximum of 30°C on a gentle spin with non-biological detergent. Do not tumble dry and do not leave in strong sunlight.

Care & Caution

• A foot that needs poulticing needs professional attention. Have any suspected abscess, puncture, wound or unexplained lameness seen by your vet or farrier — this boot manages the dressing, it does not treat the problem.
• Woof Wear state plainly that the boot is not indestructible and is not guaranteed against damage if the horse stands on it. Expect it to be a consumable.
• Do not turn out or work in it without a deep overreach boot over the top, as Woof Wear require.
• Take the boot off at least once a day, check the pastern and heel for rubs and the skin for softening, and re-dress as your vet has instructed.
