Woof Wear UV Fly Mask with Ears – Black, Small
The reason to buy a UV fly mask is not only flies. A horse with a bald face, a blaze, or pink skin around the eyes and eyelids burns there, and repeated sunburn on unpigmented skin around the eye is a genuine welfare problem as well as a nuisance. The vision mesh on this mask shades the eye and the surrounding skin while the horse can still see out of it.
The body is no-rub spacer fabric with soft 3D-shaped ears rather than flat tubes, and a contoured nose seal that stops flies crawling up from below. The forelock can be worn in or out. Woof Wear make the mask in six sizes from XXS to XL; Small suits roughly 13.2–14.2hh, which is a large pony or a small cob.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Vision mesh that shades the eyes and eyelids — the point of the product on a pink-skinned face.
- No-rub spacer fabric body, so the mask sits softly on the cheekbones instead of pressing.
- 3D-shaped ears, which hold their shape rather than collapsing onto the ear.
- Contoured nose seal that closes the gap flies use to get underneath.
- Forelock friendly — the forelock can be worn inside or outside the mask.
- Takes the optional Woof Wear UV Nose Protector, which clips on to shade a pink muzzle as well.
Suitable For
- Large ponies and small cobs of roughly 13.2–14.2hh.
- Horses with bald faces, blazes or pink eyelids that burn in summer.
- All-day turnout through the fly season.
- Horses badly bothered by flies around the eyes and ears.
- Between sizes: the XS covers roughly 12.2–13.1hh and the Medium roughly 14.3–15.2hh. A mask that is too big shifts and rubs the eye, so err towards the closer fit.
- Not for riding in. The Woof Wear Ride On Fly Mask is the one made to be worn over or under a bridle.
How to Use
- Fit so the mesh is clear of the eyelashes and nothing touches the eye itself — check by looking in from the side.
- Seat the ears squarely so they are not folded or twisted inside the fabric.
- Set the nose seal flat against the face all the way round, without pulling the mask up towards the eye.
- Close all straps before washing. Machine wash at a maximum of 30°C on a gentle spin with non-biological detergent.
- Do not tumble dry and do not leave in strong sunlight.
Specification
- No-rub spacer fabric with 3D-shaped ears, vision mesh and a contoured nose seal.
- Size Small. The range runs XXS, XS, Small, Medium, Large and XL.
- Black. Woof Wear list this mask in Turquoise on their own site.
- Registered Community Design 008038103-0001.
- Woof Wear reference 1012814.
- Woof Wear quote no UV blocking percentage or test standard for the mask itself and publish their fly mask sizing as a chart image with no head measurements, so the height guide above is approximate and no percentage is claimed here. The separate UV Nose Protector is tested to BS EN 13758-1: 2002.
Care & Caution
- Fit around the eye is the safety issue. Mesh or fabric resting on the eye or the lashes will scratch the cornea, so check the clearance every time the mask goes on.
- Take the mask off and check the face daily. Rubs appear on the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and behind the ears, and they appear quickly on a dirty mask.
- Wash it. Grit and dust in the spacer fabric is what turns a comfortable mask into a rubbing one.
- Stop using a torn or distorted mask — a hole lets flies in and a stretched mask slips onto the eye.
