Woof Wear UV Fly Mask with Ears – Black, Extra Large

XL is the largest fly mask Woof Wear make, for big horses of roughly 16.3–17.2hh. Size matters more on a fly mask than on almost any other piece of kit, because a mask that is too small drags the mesh in towards the eye and a mask that is too big slides about and does the same thing from the other direction. On a big-headed warmblood or draft the Large simply will not sit still.

The construction is no-rub spacer fabric with soft 3D-shaped ears and a contoured nose seal, and the vision mesh shades the eye and the skin around it. That shading is the real reason to buy a UV mask: pale eyelids and bald faces burn, and repeated sunburn there is a welfare problem, not a cosmetic one.

Performance & Benefits
  • The largest size in the range, so a big or long head is properly covered rather than stretched into.
  • Vision mesh shading the eyes and eyelids against sun as well as flies.
  • No-rub spacer fabric, which is what makes all-day wear tolerable.
  • 3D-shaped ears that keep their form on a large ear instead of flattening.
  • Contoured nose seal, closing the gap flies use from underneath.
  • Forelock friendly, and takes the optional Woof Wear UV Nose Protector.
<>
Suitable For
  • Big horses of roughly 16.3–17.2hh.
  • Warmbloods, drafts and heavy hunters with long, broad heads.
  • Horses with bald faces or pink eyelids that burn through the summer.
  • All-day turnout in the fly season.
  • If the Large slides around but the XL gapes at the jaw, the Large is still the safer choice — a mask that moves will find the eye. There is no size above XL.
  • Not a riding mask. Use the Woof Wear Ride On Fly Mask, which is made to be worn with a bridle.
<>
How to Use
  • Check from the side that the mesh stands clear of the eyelashes and nothing rests on the eye.
  • Seat both ears squarely without folding or twisting them inside the fabric.
  • Lay the nose seal flat against the face all round, without lifting the mask towards the eye.
  • Close all straps before washing. Machine wash at a maximum of 30°C on a gentle spin with non-biological detergent.
  • Do not tumble dry and do not leave in strong sunlight.

Care & Caution
  • The eye is what you are protecting and what you can damage. Any mesh or seam touching the cornea or the lashes will scratch it — check the clearance each time the mask goes on.
  • Remove the mask and check the face every day. On a big head the cheekbones and the poll take the pressure.
  • Keep it clean. Grit held in spacer fabric against a bald face is what causes rubs.
  • Replace a torn or stretched mask rather than patching it; a slack mask moves onto the eye.
