This is Agrifence's contactless fence tester: a digital voltmeter that reads up to 10kV without being wired into anything. The older style of 10kV tester needs a probe pushed into the ground and a hook on the line before it will tell you a thing, which is a nuisance when all you want is to know whether the fence is alive on your way past.

The wireless unit is held near a live conductor and gives a reading straight away. It is small enough to live in a coat pocket alongside the gate keys, which is the point — a tester you carry is a tester you actually use, and a fence checked weekly rarely gets the chance to fail quietly.

How to Use

• A large drop between energiser and far end points to vegetation on the line, a cracked insulator or a poor joint.
• Keep the unit dry and out of the sun when not in use.
