The Timberwolf is the range Ancol have been making leather collars for since 1971, and it is still cut from top-grain bridle leather in the UK and sewn down both sides with bonded thread. That double row of stitching is the detail worth paying for: it is what decides whether a leather collar lasts a season or a decade.

Sable is the warm mid-brown of the four Timberwolf colours, and it darkens and softens as it is worn rather than cracking. This is size 3, cut for necks of 28 to 36cm, which puts it with spaniels, whippets, small terriers and similar light-boned dogs. Measure round the neck with a tape before ordering — a size 3 dog is often a size 4 dog in a thick winter coat.

How to Use

• Measure round the middle of the neck with a soft tape, then check the figure falls inside 28–36cm.
• Fasten so two fingers slide comfortably underneath but the collar cannot pull over the ears.
• Re-check the fit on a growing dog, and again when a winter coat comes in or moults out.
• Work the buckle through the same hole where you can, and let new leather bed in over the first few weeks.

Care & Caution

• Leather is natural and porous, so colour and finish vary a little from collar to collar. That is the material, not a fault.
• Avoid saturating it. Natural dye can transfer to a coat or to furniture while the leather is wet.
• If it does get soaked, air dry it away from direct heat. Radiators and hairdryers make leather brittle and it does not come back.
• Condition with a suitable leather conditioner about once a year, and store it dry.
• Check the stitching and the buckle holes for wear each time you condition it, and replace the collar if a hole has torn through.
