This is the 10mm version of Ancol's Viva rope lead, the thinner of the two thicknesses they make, and Ancol rate it for dogs up to 30kg — small and mid-sized dogs, from a terrier up to a spaniel or a lighter collie. At 1.07m it is a short everyday town lead rather than something that gives a dog range.

The reflective element is woven into the poly-weave webbing, and it is worth being clear about what that does. Reflective thread throws a vehicle's headlights back towards the driver, which is why a car picks you out sooner than it otherwise would. It is not a light. On a genuinely dark lane with nothing shining at you, the lead does nothing at all, so if you walk unlit routes, pair it with something that emits its own light.

How to Use

• Clip the trigger hook to the D-ring of a well-fitted collar or harness before you let go of your dog.
• Put the handle loop over your wrist and take the slack up in your hand. Do not wind the rope round your fingers.
• Press the gate of the hook shut with a thumb and tug it against the ring to check it has seated.
• Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry naturally.
• Do not bleach it, tumble dry it, or dry it against a radiator.

Care & Caution

• Reflective is not illuminated. The weave only works when a headlight or torch beam falls on it, so add a lit collar band or a clip-on light for unlit paths.
