Aubiose Hemp Horse Bedding – 20kg

Aubiose is chopped hemp shiv — the woody core of the hemp stem — and it is the original hemp bedding rather than one of the many that followed it. The distinction that matters on a yard is that it is dust-extracted, not simply screened: plenty of beddings are described as low dust, and rather fewer have had the dust actually taken out of them.

In use it behaves quite differently from straw or shavings. Liquid goes down into the lower layer rather than spreading across the surface, so the horse stands on a dry bed while the wet sits below, waiting to be dug out. Aubiose put consumption at about one 20kg bale a week once a bed is established, and the resulting heap is roughly half the volume of a straw one.

How to Use

• Aubiose give seven to eight bales to lay a bed in a standard 3.5m x 3.5m stall.
• After that, about one bale a week keeps it topped up.
• Skip out thoroughly every day — the wet sits below the surface, so lifting only what you can see leaves it in the bed.
• Lay it deeper than you would shavings when first converting, then reduce once you see how little it takes.
• Store bales off the ground and under cover. Hemp will draw damp out of a concrete floor before you ever use it.
