Baileys Alfalfa Blend – 18kg
Alfalfa Blend is Baileys' mid-range chaff: high-temperature dried alfalfa mixed with green oat straw, lightly coated in molasses and soya oil and dusted with mint. The straw takes the edge off the alfalfa's protein and energy, so it sits between a plain straw chaff and a pure alfalfa one at 9 MJ/kg.
It is a fibre feed rather than a complete one, so it either bulks out a compound feed or replaces part of the hay or haylage ration. Baileys use no mould inhibitors and no artificial preservatives in it, and the mint is there because a lot of horses will pick around an unflavoured chaff.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 30% crude fibre and 9 MJ/kg digestible energy — a genuine fibre feed rather than a filler.
- Starch at 3.75% and sugar at 7.5%, low enough to sit inside most low-starch diets.
- 15% protein and 4% oil, from the alfalfa itself and the soya oil dressing.
- Green oat straw dilutes the alfalfa, giving a softer, less rich chaff than a pure alfalfa product.
- Mint dusting, which gets most fussy feeders eating it.
- No mould inhibitors and no artificial preservatives.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies with moderate energy requirements that need more fibre.
- Horses on a low-starch diet who still need an energy source.
- Poorer doers whose long-forage intake is limited.
- Replacing part of the hay or haylage ration, or bulking out a small hard feed.
- Not the lowest-calorie chaff Baileys make — a good doer on restricted grazing is better on Baileys Light Chaff.
Feeding
- Feed alongside forage, either mixed into a hard feed or fed on its own.
- One level Stubbs round bowl holds about 0.5kg of Alfalfa Blend, and Baileys ask that you feed by weight rather than by scoop.
- It can replace part of the hay or haylage ration, weight for weight.
- Alfalfa Blend is not a fully balanced feed. Where no compound feed is given, Baileys advise feeding it with a balancer — their Lo-Cal, Performance or Stud Balancer.
- Baileys publish their per-workload rates on the bag rather than on their website, so ring their nutrition team for a rate for a particular horse.
- Introduce over a week or so and keep clean water in front of the horse.
