Bedsoft Bio is oil seed rape straw rather than the wheat straw most yards are used to. The stem is hollow and coarser, which is what gives the bed its lift and its absorbency, and it is put through what Bedsoft call a state of the art dust extraction process before baling.

The straw is then treated with a blend of oils including Eucalyptus citriodora, which Bedsoft describe as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral and insect repellent treatment. The same treatment makes the straw taste wrong to a horse, which is the usual reason people give up on a straw bed. One 16kg bale.

How to Use

• Build the bed to a good depth over the whole box, banking the walls.
• Skip out daily and top up with fresh straw as the bed is used.
• Store bales dry and off the floor; the wrapping is not weatherproof once opened.
• Spent bedding composts readily and can go straight on the muck heap.

Care & Caution

• Straw bedding is not forage. The oil treatment is there to stop horses eating the bed; a horse that still eats straw bedding risks impaction colic and should be seen by a vet.
