Burlybed Light – Oilseed Rape Straw Bedding

Burlybed Light is plain oilseed rape straw bedding, shredded and double dust extracted on the farm in Cornwall. The straw is a by-product of oilseed rape production, sourced from British Farm Assured farms in the south of England, so a bed that would otherwise be a disposal problem becomes the bedding itself.

This is the untreated version. There is no eucalyptus, no aloe vera and no added scent, which is exactly what some owners want — a plain, absorbent, free-draining straw bed with nothing on it. It is soft and supportive, it rots down quicker than shavings or long straw, and it can be spread straight on the land.

Performance & Benefits
  • 100% oilseed rape straw from British Farm Assured farms in the south of England.
  • Shredded and free draining, so wet passes through rather than sitting at the surface.
  • Double dust extracted during processing. Burlybed are careful about the claim: they say they would never claim to be 100% dust free, only that they work to keep dust content low.
  • Soft and supportive underfoot, and lighter to handle than long straw.
  • Rots down quicker than shavings or straw and can go straight on the land.
  • Packed in low density polyethylene, the same material as a supermarket bag for life, made from one third recycled content and 100% recyclable.

Suitable For
  • Horses and ponies on a deep or shallow bed.
  • Owners who want an untreated, unscented bedding.
  • Yards with their own muck heap and land to spread on.
  • Anyone moving away from shavings for cost or rot-down reasons.
  • Not the right choice for a horse that eats its bed — Burlybed Light Extra is the same straw carrying the eucalyptus and aloe vera treatment that deters that, and Soft Extra is the treated wheat straw version.

How to Use
  • In an average 12ft by 12ft stable, use 4 to 6 bales to set up a bed.
  • Top up as needed rather than on a fixed schedule.
  • A deep bed works best; let the wet drain to the base and lift it from there.
  • Skip out daily to keep the surface dry.
  • Recycle the empty bags with carrier bags at a supermarket collection point.
