Canagan Country Game Dry Dog Food – 12kg

The 12kg sack is Canagan's bulk size for Country Game, and the arithmetic is the reason to buy it: Canagan cost the recipe from a 12kg bag at 68p a day for a 5kg dog and £1.70 a day for a 20kg one. The recipe is the same 37% protein blend of duck, turkey, venison and herring as the smaller bags.

Sweet potato, peas and potato carry the carbohydrate, and the botanical end of the list runs to seaweed, apple, carrot, spinach, psyllium, camomile, marigold and cranberry. Twelve kilos is a lot of food to keep fresh, so it suits a large dog or more than one dog rather than a terrier.

Suitable For
  • Puppies and adults — Canagan's labelling is For Puppies & Adults.
  • Large breeds and multi-dog households that will use 12kg before it goes stale.
  • Owners already settled on the recipe and buying for cost per day.
  • Kennels and working homes feeding several dogs the same food.
  • Too much food to keep fresh for a single small dog — the 2kg bag of the same recipe is the sensible size there.

Feeding
  • Canagan's adult guide, in grams a day for maintenance and for active dogs: 5kg 80g/100g, 10kg 120g/150g, 15kg 150g/190g, 20kg 200g/240g, 30kg 290g/350g, 40kg 370g/420g, 50kg 450g/540g.
  • Puppy portions run by expected adult weight: 65–90g a day for a toy breed, 145–180g for 5–10kg, 215–255g for 10–25kg and 375–430g for 25–45kg, tapering back to adult rations from around a year.
  • Change over across a week: a quarter Canagan on day one, half by day three, three quarters by day five, all of it by day seven.
  • Cut the ration by 10% if the dog carries too much weight and raise it by 10% if it carries too little.
  • A 12kg sack lasts a 20kg dog on maintenance roughly two months.
  • Decant into an airtight container if the bag will be open more than a few weeks.
