Canagan Free-Run Chicken Light/Senior Dry Dog Food – 2kg

Light/Senior is the same free-range chicken recipe with the fat taken out rather than the meat. Canagan hold crude protein at 34% — exactly the adult figure — while dropping crude fat from 17% to 14% and energy from 391 to 372 kcal per 100g. An older or heavier dog eats a normal-looking bowl and still takes in fewer calories.

The other change is joint support. Glucosamine and MSM go up to 1,440 mg/kg each and chondroitin sulphate to 1,050 mg/kg, well above the 830 and 610 in the standard chicken recipe. At 2kg this is the trial size, enough for a 10kg senior to eat for a fortnight before you commit to the 6kg or 12kg bag.

Performance & Benefits
  • Crude fat 14% and 372 kcal per 100g, against 17% and 391 kcal in the standard chicken recipe.
  • Crude protein held at 34%, so muscle is not sacrificed to weight loss.
  • Glucosamine and MSM at 1,440 mg/kg each, chondroitin sulphate at 1,050 mg/kg.
  • 27% freshly prepared free-range chicken plus 27% dried chicken — slightly more meat than the standard recipe.
  • Grain free, with sweet potato, potato and peas providing the carbohydrate.
  • Chicken fat reduced to 2.3% and salmon oil left out altogether, which is where most of the calorie saving comes from.
<>
Suitable For
  • Dogs from around seven years old, on Canagan's senior maintenance rates.
  • Overweight adults of any age that need calories cut without cutting protein.
  • Dogs starting to stiffen, where the higher glucosamine and chondroitin earn their place.
  • Canagan label this recipe for adults only — it is not a puppy food, and a growing dog should be on Canagan Free-Run Chicken.
  • Small breeds may prefer the smaller kibble of Canagan Small Breed Light/Senior, which is the same recipe.
<>
Feeding
  • Senior maintenance from seven years: 80g at 5kg bodyweight, 130g at 10kg, 170g at 15kg, 220g at 20kg.
  • Overweight dogs on a reducing ration: 70g at 5kg, 110g at 10kg, 150g at 15kg, 190g at 20kg.
  • Larger dogs: senior maintenance is 290g at 30kg, 350g at 40kg and 420g at 50kg.
  • Move across from the old food over a week, a quarter at a time.
  • Weigh out the day's ration in the morning and take treats from it, or the calorie saving is lost.

Composition & Analysis
  • Composition: freshly prepared free-range chicken (27%), dried chicken (27%), sweet potato, potato, peas, alfalfa, dried egg (3%), chicken fat (2.3%), chicken gravy (1.5%), glucosamine (1,440 mg/kg), MSM (1,440 mg/kg), apple, carrot, fructooligosaccharides, spinach, psyllium, seaweed, chondroitin sulphate (1,050 mg/kg), peppermint, camomile, marigold, cranberry, aniseed and fenugreek.
  • Analytical constituents: crude protein 34%, crude fat 14%, crude fibre 3%, crude ash 8.5%, omega 6 2.4%, calcium 1.6%, phosphorus 0.95%.

  • Nutritional additives per kg: vitamin A 15,000 IU, vitamin D3 1,200 IU, vitamin E 150 mg, taurine 1,500 mg.
  • Canagan publish no omega 3 figure for this recipe, only omega 6 at 2.4%. There is no salmon oil in it, which is consistent with that.
