Canagan Insect Protein Dry Dog Food – 1.5kg

Black soldier fly larvae make up 49.8% of this recipe, split between freshly prepared insects at 25%, dried insects at 19.3% and insect oil at 5.5%. For a dog that has reacted to every conventional meat, an insect protein is genuinely novel in a way that a switch from chicken to duck is not.

It is also the leanest and lowest-energy food in the Canagan dry dog range at 14% fat and 356 kcal per 100g, with the highest crude fibre at 5%. That combination suits a dog carrying weight as well as one with a sensitive gut. The 1.5kg bag is the smallest of the three sizes Canagan make.

Suitable For
  • Puppies and adults — Canagan label Insect Protein For Puppies & Adults.
  • Dogs with food sensitivities where conventional meats have been ruled out.
  • Dogs needing a leaner food, at 14% fat and 356 kcal per 100g.
  • Owners buying on carbon footprint as well as on the dog.
  • It still contains salmon oil at 1.2%, so it is not suitable for a dog reacting to fish. Canagan Grass Fed Lamb also carries salmon oil; neither range currently offers a fish-free option.
  • A dog that needs to gain weight is better on Highland Feast at 397 kcal per 100g.

Feeding
  • Canagan's adult guide, in grams a day for maintenance and for active dogs: 5kg 80g/100g, 10kg 120g/150g, 15kg 150g/190g, 20kg 200g/240g, 30kg 290g/350g, 40kg 370g/420g, 50kg 450g/540g.
  • Puppy portions run by expected adult weight: 65–90g a day for a toy breed, 145–180g for 5–10kg, 215–255g for 10–25kg and 375–430g for 25–45kg, tapering back to adult rations from around a year.
  • Change over across a week: a quarter Canagan on day one, half by day three, three quarters by day five, all of it by day seven.
  • Cut the ration by 10% if the dog carries too much weight and raise it by 10% if it carries too little.
  • Portions run higher than on a richer food — at 356 kcal per 100g a dog needs more of it for the same energy.
  • A 1.5kg bag covers around twelve days for a 10kg dog on maintenance.
