Canagan Light/Senior Free-Range Chicken – 12kg

The Light/Senior recipe takes the fat down to 14% and the energy to 372 kcal per 100g while holding crude protein at 34%, which is the part that matters in an ageing dog. Chicken still makes up 54% of the bag — 27% freshly prepared free-range chicken and 27% dried chicken — so a dog eating less food is not also eating less protein.

Joint support is built into the kibble at 1,440 mg/kg each of glucosamine and MSM with 1,050 mg/kg chondroitin sulphate. This 12kg sack is the largest of the three bag sizes Canagan make in the recipe; at their senior maintenance rate a 20kg dog takes about 220g a day, so a bag runs roughly eight weeks.

Performance & Benefits
  • 54% chicken in total — 27% freshly prepared free-range chicken and 27% dried chicken.
  • Crude protein held at 34% with fat at 14% and 372 kcal per 100g, so the calories come down without the protein following.
  • Glucosamine 1,440 mg/kg, MSM 1,440 mg/kg and chondroitin sulphate 1,050 mg/kg.
  • Grain free — sweet potato, potato and peas carry the carbohydrate, with no wheat, maize or barley.
  • Seaweed for iodine, plus fructooligosaccharides, psyllium, marigold, cranberry and camomile.
  • A 12kg sack, the most economical of the 2kg, 6kg and 12kg bags Canagan make in this recipe.

Suitable For
  • Dogs of seven years and over on a maintenance ration.
  • Adult dogs carrying too much weight and being fed down to a target.
  • Older dogs showing early stiffness, for the glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin.
  • Medium and large dogs, or households with more than one dog, where 12kg is used up while it is still fresh.
  • Far too much food for one small dog to finish — Canagan Small Breed Light/Senior Dry Dog Food 2kg does the same job in a smaller kibble and a smaller bag.
<>
Feeding
  • Canagan's senior maintenance rate, 7 years and over: 5kg dog 80g a day, 10kg 130g, 15kg 170g, 20kg 220g, 30kg 290g, 40kg 350g, 50kg 420g.
  • For a dog being slimmed, Canagan give a lower scale at the same bodyweights: 70g, 110g, 150g, 190g, 250g, 325g and 390g.
  • Feed a slimming dog to its target weight rather than its current one, and weigh the ration rather than scooping it.
  • Change over across a week — 25% Canagan on day one, half and half on day three, 75% on day five, all Canagan by day seven.
  • Adjust by 10% either way against body condition, and keep fresh water available.
