Four fish go into this one: freshly prepared Scottish salmon at 30.5%, dried herring at 12.2%, freshly prepared trout at 6.6% and dried white fish at 2%, with a further 5% dried salmon and 2% salmon oil. There is no chicken, no turkey, no lamb and no egg anywhere in the composition — unusually for a complete dry food, the animal protein is fish and nothing else.

That matters for a small dog with itchy skin, because it makes a genuine single-species exclusion trial possible without moving to a prescription diet. Omega 3 comes out at 2%, four times the level in Canagan's chicken recipes. The kibble is the small-breed size and Canagan pack it in 2kg and 6kg.

Feeding

• Small-breed adult maintenance, under an hour of exercise: 50g at 3kg bodyweight, 80g at 5kg, 100g at 7kg, 120g at 10kg.
• Active small-breed adults over an hour a day: 65g at 3kg, 100g at 5kg, 120g at 7kg, 150g at 10kg.
• Small-breed puppies: toy 1–5kg expected adult weight take 65–90g a day, small 5–10kg take 145–180g.
• Change over across seven days, a quarter at a time, as Canagan set out.
• If skin is the reason for the change, give it eight to twelve weeks and feed nothing else in that time — one chicken treat undoes an exclusion trial.
