The growth recipe: 36.0% protein, the highest in the ACTIVE dog range, and salmon oil raised to 1.5% so omega-3 reaches 0.6%. Carnilove list it for puppies from one to twelve months and for pregnant and nursing bitches, whose requirements in late pregnancy look much like a growing pup's.

Fresh salmon leads at 26%, with turkey protein at 20% and hydrolysed turkey at 12%. Carnilove's feeding table runs by expected adult weight and age and asks for the day's food to be split across three to five meals, which matters more at this age than what is in the bowl.

Feeding

• Feed by expected adult weight and age; Carnilove's table spans 55g a day for the smallest pups to 890g for the largest.
• Divide into three to five meals a day — a young pup cannot hold a day's food in two sittings.
• Carnilove publish separate amounts for gestating bitches by bodyweight and week of pregnancy.
• Moisten with a little warm water for pups just off milk, then dry it off over a fortnight.
• Weigh weekly and adjust to keep growth steady rather than rapid.
• Fresh water down at all times.

Care & Caution

• Do not add calcium, bone meal or a mineral supplement to a complete growth food. Excess calcium during growth causes skeletal problems rather than preventing them.
• Feed to the table and to body condition, not to appetite. A pup that empties every bowl is not necessarily underfed.
