Fresh fish at 60% with salmon oil at 3% on top gives this recipe omega-3 at 1.5% — five times what the duck and turkey True Fresh foods carry, with EPA at 0.2% and DHA at 0.25% declared separately. For a small dog with a dull coat or itchy skin, that is the reason to pick it.

Carnilove have discontinued the recipe and replaced it with True Fresh Duck for Small Breeds, so what is on the shelf is what remains. It does contain chicken fat, unlike the duck version that took its place, which is worth knowing before you switch a chicken-sensitive dog onto it.

Feeding

• Carnilove's daily amounts: 1kg 30g, 2kg 40g, 4kg 75g, 6kg 85g, 8kg 110g, 10kg 130g.
• Two meals a day suit a small dog better than one.
• Adjust to body condition — at 3,855 kcal/kg this is the densest food in the range.
• Introduce over a week, and keep fresh water available.
