Carr & Day & Martin Vanner & Prest Neatsfoot Compound – 1 Litre
Neatsfoot Compound is the restorative in the Carr & Day & Martin leather range — pure neatsfoot oil blended with mineral oils in a fast-acting, deep-penetrating formula that, crucially, will not rot stitching. That last point is what separates a proper compound from raw neatsfoot oil, which is hard on thread over time.
It is the oil for leather that has gone stiff: new tack that needs breaking in, a bridle that has come out of storage board-hard, or anything that has been repeatedly soaked and dried out over a winter. Used routinely rather than as a rescue, it keeps leather rehydrated and stops the drying and cracking starting in the first place. This is the litre bottle.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Fast-acting, deep-penetrating formula that gets into the leather rather than sitting on it.
- Contains pure neatsfoot oil blended with mineral oils.
- Will not rot stitching, unlike raw neatsfoot oil used alone.
- Nourishes and restores both old and new leather.
- Softens stiff or new leather so it works in properly.
- Can be used routinely as a preventative against drying and cracking.
Suitable For
- Stiff new tack that needs softening before it is comfortable.
- Leather restored after storage or prolonged exposure to rain.
- Harness, working saddlery and heavy leather generally.
- Routine rehydration of tack that lives outdoors.
- Not for aniline or untreated leather, suede or nubuck — and for everyday conditioning on tack already in good order, Belvoir Step 2 Tack Conditioner is the lighter product.
How to Use
- Make sure the leather is clean first.
- Apply a thin layer to the flesh side of the leather and allow it to soak in.
- If required, apply a thin layer to the grain side as well.
- Re-apply only if the leather still appears stiff.
- Take care not to over-oil.
- Test on a hidden area before the first use.
Specification
- 1 litre bottle.
- Pure neatsfoot oil blended with mineral oils.
- Carr & Day & Martin list Vanner & Prest Neatsfoot Compound in 500ml, 1 litre and 5 litre.
- Formulated so that it will not rot stitching.
- Carr & Day & Martin name the oils used but publish no percentage breakdown, so none is stated here.
Care & Caution
- Not suitable for aniline or untreated leather, suede or nubuck. Test on a hidden area first — oil darkens leather permanently.
- Do not over-oil. Carr & Day & Martin say so explicitly, and over-oiled leather goes limp and loses tensile strength — which is a genuine safety matter on stirrup leathers, billets, reins and girth straps.
- Build it up in thin coats over several days rather than saturating a piece in one session.
- Check stitching and safety-critical leather regardless of how well it is fed.
