Derma Gel is an isotonic hydrogel for cuts, grazes, bites and skin loss on horses and other animals. It goes on as a gel and stays there as a protective layer, holding a moist environment over the wound so epithelial cells can migrate across it. The manufacturer's stated figures are a 60% reduction in healing time and epithelial cell viability maintained at 97%.

The practical appeal is that it needs nothing over the top. Derma Gel state that no secondary dressing is required, which makes it usable in places a bandage will not stay, and they describe it as safe to use in competition, during gestation, and if the animal licks it.

How to Use

• Cleanse the area daily with warm water or a saline solution only.
• Do not put a high-pressure hose directly onto the wound.
• Apply generously two or three times a day, as needed.
• Nothing is needed over the top. If you do bandage, the gel helps stop the dressing sticking.

Specification

• 100ml tube with a flip-top cap. Also supplied as a 50ml spray.
• Ingredients: water, alcohol, propylene glycol, Sorbus (Pyrus sorbus) extract, glycerin, Hydrocotyle (Centella asiatica) extract, Calendula officinalis extract, hydrogenated castor oil, sodium bicarbonate, carbomer, sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) extract, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) extract, thyme (Thymus vulgaris) extract, sage (Salvia officinalis) extract.
• Carbomer is present in the gel and absent from the spray formulation.

Care & Caution

• Call your vet straight away if a wound is deep, is a puncture, is too large for the sides to meet, or lies near a tendon, ligament or joint. A gel is not the answer to any of those.
• For external use only. Keep it out of eyes.
