This is the small end of the Digby & Fox flat leather collar, cut for a 26–34cm neck. At that size a plain flat strap makes more sense than a padded one: there is less collar to start with, and a bulky padded band on a terrier's neck ends up looking and feeling like a horse collar.

The leather is tan and untreated enough to darken as it is worn. How to Use

• Measure the neck with a soft tape where the collar will actually sit.
• Do the buckle up so two fingers slide flat underneath, and no more.
• Check the fit weekly on a growing puppy — a 26cm neck does not stay 26cm for long.
• Wipe clean with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally.
• Work in a little leather balsam now and again to keep it supple.

Care & Caution

• Leather must not be soaked. Swimming in it, or washing it, will rot the fibres and it will eventually pull through at a buckle hole.
• Never machine wash or tumble dry, and keep it off radiators.
• A fixed buckle collar is not a breakaway. Remove it from a crated or unsupervised dog.
• Never tether a dog by the collar, especially a small one.
• Check a puppy's collar for tightness often, and replace it as soon as the leather cracks.
