Dodson & Horrell Stroppy Mare – 1kg
Stroppy Mare is the herbal blend Dodson & Horrell put together for mares whose behaviour changes with their season. Chaste tree berries and St John’s wort sit alongside chamomile, vervain and raspberry leaves — a combination aimed at the hormonal side of the problem rather than simply sedating the horse.
It is a dried blend fed by scoop into the daily feed, at 1½ scoops for ponies and smaller horses and 2 scoops for larger ones. A 1kg tub therefore lasts roughly five to six weeks on a full-size horse, and Dodson & Horrell also list 1kg refills, 2.5kg and 5kg packs in the range.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Chaste tree berries and St John’s wort, the two ingredients aimed at normal hormonal function.
- Chamomile and vervain, long used for their calming, settling properties.
- Raspberry leaves, traditionally fed for nutritional support of the reproductive system.
- Dried and milled to a scoop-measured blend that mixes readily into hard feed or a handful of chaff.
- Fed daily rather than as a one-off, so it suits a mare who is difficult for a season rather than a single day.
Suitable For
- Mares whose temperament and handling change noticeably in season.
- Mares difficult to work with through spring and summer.
- Horses already on a balanced diet, as a targeted addition rather than a feed.
- Not for mares in foal or at stud, and not for geldings or a generally excitable horse — Dodson & Horrell Placid is the blend for nervous or excitable horses of either sex.
Feeding
- Ponies and smaller horses: 1½ scoops per day, about 22.5g.
- Larger horses: 2 scoops per day, about 30g.
- One 100ml scoop weighs 15g. Use the scoop supplied in the tub.
- Mix into the normal feed and give time for the blend to take effect — herbal supplements are fed continuously, not as a pre-event dose.
- Do not exceed the stated rate without speaking to Dodson & Horrell or your vet.

- St John’s wort and chaste tree berry are treated as prohibited substances under FEI and BHA rules. Check the current rules of your discipline and allow a withdrawal period before competing.
- Speak to your vet before feeding alongside prescribed medication, as St John’s wort is known to interact with a number of drugs.
