The Helston in orange: an 80cm net with a fine 5cm mesh, taking around 5kg of hay. A standard haynet has a mesh wide enough for a horse to take a proper mouthful, which is why a net can disappear in twenty minutes; at 5cm the hay has to come through a little at a time.

For a good doer or a pony on a weight-loss plan that is exactly what is wanted — the same weight of hay, spread across a far longer period, which keeps the gut working and the pony occupied. Orange shows up well against a dark stable wall and against hay itself, which makes an empty net easier to spot.

Care & Caution
