GO-CAT Chicken and Duck is Purina's everyday complete dry food for adult cats, and 2kg is the bag most one and two-cat households settle on. The kibble comes in three shapes: diamonds and drumsticks that carry the chicken and duck, and tripods that carry the vegetables. That is partly texture and partly a way of getting a cat that picks around its bowl to eat the lot.

The declared meat content is modest — 3% chicken and 1% duck within the meat and animal derivatives, with 0.2% dried pea and 0.2% dried carrot, which Purina say is the equivalent of 14% rehydrated vegetables in the tripod kibbles. This is a mainstream cereal-based food at a mainstream price rather than a high-meat one, and it is worth knowing that before setting it against a premium bag.

Feeding

• Purina's own guide: 50g a day for a 3kg cat, 70g for a 4kg cat and 90g for a 5kg cat.
• Split the daily amount over two or more meals and adjust on body condition rather than on the table alone.
• Fresh water alongside it at all times. This matters far more on a dry diet than a wet one.
• Change over across seven to ten days, mixing an increasing share into the current food.
• Roll the bag down and clip it. Kibble goes stale and loses its smell once it is open to the air, and a cat notices before you do.
