This is the fat ball feeder from Henry Bell's Essentials range, supplied already filled with three of their classic energy fat balls at 80g each. It comes out of the packaging ready to hang, which makes it a sensible first feeder or a quick replacement when an old cage has rusted through.

The fat balls sit loose in the cage rather than in plastic netting. Henry Bell drop the netting deliberately — it can trap feet and beaks — and the same cage refills with any standard 80g ball once the first three are gone.

Feeding

• Hang it where you can see it, near enough to cover that birds feel safe but clear of anywhere a cat can spring from.
• Henry Bell recommend feeding wild birds all year round, and keeping plenty of fresh water available nearby.
• Top the cage up with 80g fat balls as they are taken rather than letting it stand empty.
• Take the cage down and wash it out between fills.

Care & Caution

• Fat balls sold elsewhere in plastic netting can trap birds' feet and beaks. Henry Bell supply theirs loose for that reason — strip the netting off any refills that come in it.
• Suet softens in hot weather and can smear plumage, which stops a bird waterproofing itself. Take the feeder down during a heatwave.
• Wash and dry the cage between fills. Dirty feeders are how trichomonosis and salmonellosis pass between garden birds.
