A peanut feeder is a mesh cage, and the mesh is the safety feature: birds peck fragments off a whole nut through the wire instead of flying away with the nut in their beak. That is the whole reason peanuts are never fed loose. This is the Heritage Everyday version, in aluminium finished in antique gold and bronze.

Peanuts pull in a different crowd from seed. Nuthatches work down them head-first, great spotted woodpeckers will hang off one for minutes at a time, and the tits use them constantly through winter. How to Use

• Fill through the lid with whole peanuts intended for wild birds.
• Hang from a station arm, bird table or branch hook, a few metres from cover.
• Discard damp peanuts rather than letting them dry out in the feeder.
• Wash weekly in warm water with a bird-safe hygiene product and dry fully before refilling.
• Check the mesh for damage when you clean it; a split seam lets whole nuts out.

Care & Caution

• Feed peanuts only from a mesh feeder, never loose on a table or ground tray. A nestling can choke on a whole nut carried back by an adult.
• Through the breeding season, roughly April to August, kibbled peanuts or sunflower hearts are the safer option even in mesh.
• Use only peanuts sold for wild birds and tested for aflatoxin — mould toxins in nuts are invisible and lethal.
• Empty out and bin any peanuts that have become wet or dusty in the feeder.
