The Heritage Peanut Feeder is Henry Bell's 32cm aluminium mesh feeder, finished in the antique gold and bronze that runs through the whole Heritage collection, and it holds 500g of peanuts. The mesh is the point of it: peanuts sit behind wire rather than dropping through a seed port, so birds flake pieces off instead of taking nuts whole.

Aluminium keeps it light and stops the corrosion that finishes off a painted steel feeder after two winters outside. The lid lifts away for filling. Peanuts pull in the birds most people actually want at close range — blue and great tits, greenfinches, nuthatches and, in the right garden, a great spotted woodpecker.

How to Use

• Lift the lid, fill with peanuts, replace the lid and hang.
• Site it within a few metres of cover so birds have somewhere to bolt to, but not so close that a cat can reach the feeder in one jump.
• Empty and wash it every couple of weeks in warm water with a bird-safe hygiene spray, then dry it before refilling.
• Take out any nuts that have gone soft or mouldy rather than topping up over them.
• Keep fresh water nearby for drinking and bathing.

Care & Caution

• Whole peanuts should only ever be offered from a mesh feeder like this one. Loose whole nuts on a table or the ground can choke a chick.
• The risk runs from spring through late summer, when adults carry food back to the nest. Mesh is what stops a whole nut leaving the feeder.
• Check the mesh for splits. A damaged panel lets whole nuts through and undoes the point of it.
