A drilled wooden log on a jute cord, supplied with four Henry Bell Insect Oil suet logs pushed into the holes. It is the simplest feeder in the range — no lid, no catch, no mechanism to clog with fat — and the wood weathers into a hedge instead of glinting at you from across the lawn.

The logs themselves are built on insect oil from black soldier fly larvae rather than beef tallow. Because the suet sits down inside drilled holes, birds have to work it out a beakful at a time. That suits clinging species such as tits, nuthatches and woodpeckers far better than an exposed block, and it slows down the starlings.

How to Use

• Push a suet log firmly into each drilled hole so it sits flush with the wood.
• Hang by the jute cord with cover a few metres away, out of a cat's reach.
• Replace logs as they empty rather than pressing fresh suet on top of old residue.
• Brush the holes out with a stiff brush between refills and let the wood dry.
• Do not soak the feeder. Wood swells, and the holes tighten around the next log.
