Honeychop Chopped Oat Straw – 12.5kg
This is straight oat straw, chopped, screened to take out the fine particles and dust-extracted, with nothing added at all. Honeychop use sun-dried straw from crops that have not been desiccated, and describe it as a pure natural product — no molasses, no alfalfa, no additives.
At 40% fibre, 2% protein and 5MJ/kg it is the lowest-energy feed Honeychop make, and the one they name as suitable for laminitic horses, ponies and donkeys. Non-structural carbohydrate is 2.2%, which is why it works as a partial hay replacer for a good doer that still needs something to chew on.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 100% oat straw and nothing else — no molasses, alfalfa or additives.
- Screened and dust-extracted, so the bag is clean to handle and clean to feed.
- 40% crude fibre, the highest in the Honeychop range.
- 5MJ/kg digestible energy and 2.2% NSC, about as low as a bagged chaff goes.
- Sun-dried straw from crops that have not been desiccated.
- Bulks out a small hard feed without adding calories.
Suitable For
- Horses, ponies and donkeys prone to laminitis — Honeychop name all three.
- Good doers, overweight animals and native breeds.
- Use as a partial hay replacer when forage is short.
- Horses with intolerances, given the single-ingredient composition.
- At 2% protein it supplies no useful protein, vitamins or minerals — if it makes up much of the diet, pair it with a balancer such as GWF Equilibra Feed Balancer.
Feeding
- Feed alone or mixed through a hard feed.
- Honeychop describe it as suitable for partial hay replacement. They publish no feeding rate, so none is stated here.
- Introduce gradually, and never replace all the forage at once.
- Fresh water at all times.
