Red is the loud one, and on a shared yard that is the practical argument for it: a red brush comes home from the wash box. Underneath the colour this is Hy's long bristle dandy, 20.5 x 6.2cm, with long polypropylene bristles set in a soft touch two-tone back.

The long bristles are what separate it from an ordinary dandy brush. They reach down through a thick winter coat to the skin and flick dried mud out from underneath, where a short stiff brush only skates over the top of it. That makes this the first brush out of the box on a field-kept horse in February, and one of the last you would reach for on a clipped one in July.

How to Use

• Wait until mud is dry. A dandy brush works on dried mud and simply smears wet mud.
• Work in short flicking strokes in the direction the coat lies, starting at the neck and finishing at the quarters.
• Keep it off the mane, tail and face — the long bristles pull hair out and are too sharp for thin skin.
• Knock the brush against a wall or a boot every few strokes to clear it.
• Wash in warm water with a little mild detergent, rinse, and stand bristles down to dry.
