KM Elite Padded Headcollar – Black, Colt (XXS)

Colt is KM Elite's XXS fitting, one step up from Shetland, and it is aimed squarely at foals and yearlings rather than at small ponies. Black keeps it plain, which is what most studs want on a young animal that is going to be photographed and shown in hand.

Because a foal learns about pressure through its headcollar, the padding under the crownpiece and noseband is doing real work here rather than adding comfort at the margin. The rest is standard: double and triple weave lined nylon, brass-colour clips, throat lash clip.

Performance & Benefits
  • Sized for youngstock rather than being a scaled-down pony headcollar.
  • Double and triple weave lined nylon webbing, which is what gives the headcollar its stiffness and its life on a busy yard.
  • Soft padded headpiece and nosepiece, placed where a plain nylon headcollar normally marks a horse.
  • Brass-colour clips and fittings throughout, including a throat lash clip.
  • The throat lash clip lets you fasten the headcollar round the neck first, which helps with a horse that lifts its head away from you.
  • Made in the same colour across KM Elite's matching lead ropes, so a set can be kept together per horse.

Suitable For
  • Everyday handling — catching, leading, tying up, grooming and travelling.
  • Colt (XXS), between XXXS (Shetland) and XS (Small Pony).
  • Foals, yearlings and youngstock being handled and shown in hand.
  • Yards that colour-code headcollars so the right one goes on the right horse.
  • Will be outgrown by a ridden pony — XS (Small Pony) and Small (Large Pony) are the next fittings up.
<>
How to Use
  • Fit the noseband about two fingers below the cheekbone, well clear of the soft part of the nose.
  • You should be able to slide a flat hand under the noseband and two fingers under the cheekpiece.
  • Adjust at the headpiece buckle, and use the throat lash clip rather than threading the whole headcollar over the ears.
  • Hand wash in warm water and air dry naturally. Do not tumble dry.
  • Rinse mud and sweat off before it dries into the weave, which is what stiffens nylon webbing over time.
  • Check the fit weekly on a growing foal; this fitting is outgrown in months rather than years.

Care & Caution
  • This is not a breakaway headcollar. The webbing and fittings are made not to give, so do not leave it on a horse turned out, loose in a stable or unattended in a trailer.
  • Tie to a loop of baler twine rather than straight to a fixed ring, so something breaks before the horse does.
  • Recheck the fit as the horse changes shape through the year — a headcollar left a hole too tight is what causes rubs on the nose and poll.
