KM Elite Padded Headcollar – Hot Pink, XXS

XXS is the fitting KM Elite name Colt, the second-smallest rung of their seven-size ladder and the one for foals, miniatures and very small ponies. It is built to the same specification as the horse sizes — double- and triple-weave lined nylon webbing, a padded headpiece, a padded nosepiece and brass-colour clips — simply scaled down.

Small heads rub easily, because there is less surface area to spread the load and a foal or a miniature spends a disproportionate amount of its handling time in a headcollar being taught to lead. Padding on the nose and behind the ears is worth more at this size than at any other.

How to Use

• Buckle on the near side, with the noseband sitting about two fingers below the cheekbone.
• Adjust so two flat fingers fit between the noseband and the nose — any tighter and the padding cannot spread the pressure.
• Clip the lead rope to the ring under the jaw, not to a side ring.
• Hand wash in warm water and air dry naturally. KM Elite say not to tumble dry.

Care & Caution

• This is a standard nylon headcollar, not a breakaway one. The webbing and fittings will not part under load, so do not leave it on a horse turned out unsupervised — a fixed headcollar catches on fences, gateposts and hind shoes.
• Tie to a loop of breakable baler twine with a quick-release knot, never directly to a ring, gate or post.
• Check the stitching, buckle tongues and clip springs before each use and retire the headcollar once the webbing frays.
• A foal or a miniature can be pulled off its feet by a headcollar that does not give. Lead from a rope, never by the headcollar itself, and never tie a young foal solid.
