A grooming block is a light abrasive block, about the size of a bar of soap, rubbed over the coat to lift what a brush leaves behind: loose hair coming out in a moult, dried mud worked into the hair, and the small hard bot eggs stuck to the legs and shoulders.

It works by friction rather than by bristles, so it crumbles slowly as it is used and every pass takes a thin layer off the block along with the hair. That makes it a consumable rather than a tool for life, and it is worth keeping one in the box through the spring moult, when nothing else clears a coat as quickly.

How to Use

• Work on a dry coat. The block does nothing useful on wet hair.
• Rub in short strokes in the direction of the hair, with light pressure.
• Shake or brush the loosened hair off the horse as you go.
• Knock the block against a hard edge to clear its surface when it clogs.
• Keep it dry, and replace it once it has worn too small to hold comfortably.
