Mollichaff AppleChaff – 12.5kg
AppleChaff is Mollichaff Original with real apple pieces and apple essence worked through it, and it is bought almost entirely for one job: getting a fussy horse to clear its bucket. The smell carries, and horses that pick at a plain chaff will usually eat this one without argument.
Nutritionally it is a light fibre carrier rather than a feed — 7.5 MJ/kg, 24% fibre, 0.8% oil and 0.5% starch. The trade-off is sugar. At 17–22% declared, AppleChaff is the sweetest chaff Mollichaff make, so the very palatability that makes it useful also makes it the wrong bag for a metabolic horse.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Real apple pieces plus apple essence, which is why it works on horses that leave a plain chaff.
- 24% crude fibre for chew time and bulk in a bucket feed.
- Low energy at 7.5 MJ/kg and very low starch at 0.5%.
- Limestone flour supplies additional calcium.
- Useful for hiding a bitter powdered supplement or a wormer in a feed.
- Distinctive apple smell that carries across a yard, helpful with a horse off its feed after travelling or box rest.
Suitable For
- Genuinely fussy feeders and horses that pick at plain chaff.
- Horses off their feed after travel, competition or a spell of box rest.
- Disguising powdered supplements and medications in a bucket feed.
- Horses and ponies in light work with no sugar restriction.
- Not suitable for laminitic, insulin-resistant, EMS or Cushing's horses — at 17–22% sugar this is the sweetest bag in the range. Mollichaff Light Molasses Free or Mollichaff HoofKind Complete are the right choices there.
Feeding
- Mix through the hard feed dry, or lightly damped if your horse prefers it.
- Mollichaff publish no feeding rate for AppleChaff, so none is stated here.
- Feed alongside good-quality forage; this is a chaff to carry a feed, not a ration on its own.
- Introduce gradually over 7–10 days so the gut adjusts.
- Keep clean fresh water available at all times.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: straw, molasses, apple pieces, apple essence, limestone.
- Typical analysis: energy 7.5 MJ/kg. Protein 4–6.5%. Fibre 24%. Oil 0.8%. Starch 0.5%. Sugar 17–22%.
- Bag size 12.5kg.
- Mollichaff publish no ash, moisture, calcium or sodium figure for AppleChaff and no added vitamin or mineral premix is declared, so none is listed here.
- Mollichaff specify "straw" only; the wheat straw description carried on some listings is not theirs.
Care & Caution
- At 17–22% sugar this is the highest-sugar chaff in the Mollichaff range and must not be fed to horses or ponies with laminitis, EMS, PPID or insulin dysregulation.
- Because it is so palatable, horses eat it quickly and in quantity. Weigh the amount you feed rather than judging it by the scoop.
