Mollichaff Extra is the fortified member of the plain chaff family: the same molassed straw base as Original, but with a vitamin and mineral supplement built into it. Mollichaff position it for breeding stock, youngstock and horses living on a high-forage, low-concentrate diet — the animals most likely to be short of trace elements simply because they are not eating enough hard feed to get them.

It is the only 15kg bag among the Mollichaff straw chaffs, and at 8 MJ/kg it carries marginally more energy than Original while sitting slightly lower on fibre at 22%. Sugar is declared at 16–21%, so the fortification comes attached to a molassed base and the same metabolic caveats apply.

Feeding

• Feed alongside good-quality forage, mixed into the daily bucket feed.
• Mollichaff publish no feeding rate or scoop weight for Extra, so none is stated here.
• Because Extra carries its own vitamin and mineral supplement, check the total before adding a separate balancer or broad-spectrum supplement on top of it.
• Introduce gradually over 7–10 days.
• Keep clean fresh water available at all times.

Care & Caution

• At 16–21% sugar this is a molassed chaff and is not suitable for horses or ponies with laminitis, EMS, PPID or insulin dysregulation.
• Extra already contains a vitamin and mineral supplement. Stacking a second broad-spectrum balancer on top risks oversupplying trace elements such as selenium and iodine — check both labels before doubling up.
