Mollichaff ShowShine – 12.5kg
ShowShine is the oiled chaff in the range and the one that goes into the lorry in the run-up to a show. Soya oil takes it to 9% declared oil — more than ten times the 0.8% of the plain chaffs — and it is that oil, fed consistently over a few weeks, that puts bloom into a coat rather than anything applied to the outside of it.
Cherry flavouring is the other half of the formula, and it does the same job on a fussy show horse that apple does elsewhere in the range. At 9.5 MJ/kg it is the highest-energy chaff Mollichaff make, with sugar declared at 12–15% and starch at just 0.6%.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 9% oil from soya oil, for coat bloom and slow-release condition rather than a starchy energy spike.
- Highest energy in the Mollichaff chaff range at 9.5 MJ/kg.
- 23% crude fibre, so the condition comes attached to chew time.
- Cherry flavouring, which tempts show horses that go off their feed away from home.
- Very low starch at 0.6% — condition without the fizz that a cereal feed brings.
- Limestone flour for additional calcium.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies being prepared for showing or a season of turnout.
- Horses needing a coat improvement without extra starch.
- Fussy feeders, particularly away from home.
- Horses in light to medium work carrying a little less condition than you would like.
- Not suitable for laminitic or insulin-resistant horses at 12–15% sugar — Mollichaff Light Molasses Free or Mollichaff HoofKind Complete suit those better.
Feeding
- Mix through the bucket feed alongside good-quality forage.
- Mollichaff publish no feeding rate or scoop weight for ShowShine, so none is stated here.
- Allow four to six weeks of consistent feeding before judging the effect on a coat — oil works from the inside and takes time.
- Introduce gradually over 7–10 days; oiled feeds are best brought in slowly.
- Keep clean fresh water available at all times.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: straw, soya oil, molasses, cherry flavouring, limestone.
- Typical analysis: energy 9.5 MJ/kg. Protein 4–5.5%. Fibre 23%. Oil 9%. Starch 0.6%. Sugar 12–15%.
- Bag size 12.5kg.
- Mollichaff declare no added vitamin or mineral premix for ShowShine, so none is listed here — this is a conditioning chaff, not a fortified feed.
- Mollichaff specify "straw" only; the oat straw description on some listings is not their wording.
Care & Caution
- At 12–15% sugar this is a molassed chaff and is not suitable for horses or ponies with laminitis, EMS, PPID or insulin dysregulation.
- At 9% oil and 9.5 MJ/kg this will put weight on a good doer quickly. Weigh what you feed and reassess condition fortnightly.
- Oiled chaff goes rancid faster than a plain one once opened. Reseal the bag and use it within a sensible period rather than leaving it open on the feed room floor.
