Puncher's Chance is the bourbon brand of Wolf Spirit Distillery in Eugene, Oregon, founded in 2017 by Umberto Luchini after seventeen years at Campari, where he had risen to chief marketing officer before leaving in his late forties to start his own company. The D12tance, released in early 2022, is the brand's first limited edition: a 12-year-old bourbon sourced through IJW Whiskey Company in Louisville, Kentucky, from a mash bill of 84% corn, 8% malted barley, and 8% rye with a proprietary yeast strain, aged in stone and wood rickhouses, then finished in California Cabernet Sauvignon barrels before bottling at 96 proof (48% ABV). The run was 70 barrels, about 2,000 cases, at a suggested $120. Wolf Spirit's notes describe an aroma of vanilla, dark cherry, and toasted oak, a palate opening with caramel and vanilla, and a long, fruity finish. The Daily Pour found berry, honey, vanilla cream, and orange peel on the nose, a palate moving from oak into butter cream and toffee with tannin and syrupy berry from the wine cask, and a long finish of grape, blackberry, pepper, and honey.
