Sainfoin is an ancient forage legume, grown in England for centuries and largely forgotten until recently. It is sometimes called 'healthy hay', and it is a firm favourite with bees. As a feed it stands as the third plant in Simple System's range alongside grass and lucerne — and at 19.3% protein and 1.71% calcium, it is genuinely nutritious rather than merely different.

Its distinguishing property is condensed tannins. These naturally occurring compounds aid the digestion of protein, which means a horse gets more out of the protein in the rest of its ration. Fed alongside hay and grass, sainfoin does more than add variety — it improves what the horse extracts from everything else.

Suitable For

• Pregnant mares, particularly in the last trimester.

Feeding

• Introduce gradually over a week, as with any new feed.
• Ideally fed soaked. Alternatively, mix with soaked PuraBeet or a Simple System chop and dampen well.
• For foals, greedy, elderly or dentally challenged horses, the pellets must be soaked.
• Start with 100g per 100kg bodyweight per day, dry weight, increasing as required up to 5kg per day.
• Sainfoin is more nutritious than hay. If feeding in hay-replacing quantities, dilute at one part Sainfoin Pellets to two parts HayCare or PuraBeet.
