Chicken & Rice is the recipe most Field & Trial kennels start on, and the 15kg bag is the size that makes it practical — a shooting season's worth for one spaniel, or a fortnight for a run of three. Skinner's build it around brown rice at 37.8% and poultry meat meal at 27.5%, the poultry fraction being a minimum 95% chicken.

The numbers are pitched at moderate work rather than hard graft: 25% protein against 10% fat, and 353 kcal per 100g. That is a dog doing a day at the peg, a picking-up morning or a couple of agility sessions a week, not a sled team.

Suitable For

• Adult dogs working at a moderate intensity — peg dogs, picking-up dogs, agility and flyball dogs.

• Dogs that have reacted to wheat, maize or barley: Skinner's formulate this without all three.
• Dogs that must avoid soya, beef or fish protein sources.
• Not a growth food. A puppy under six months wants Field & Trial Puppy Chicken, and a dog of six to eighteen months wants Field & Trial Junior.

Feeding

• Feed dry straight from the bag, or moisten a few minutes before serving with a little tepid water if your dog prefers it.
• Skinner's publish their daily amounts as a bodyweight chart rather than a single figure, so work from the guide printed on the bag and adjust to condition.
• Split the daily ration across two meals for a deep-chested dog rather than feeding it all at once.
• Change over gradually, mixing an increasing share of the new food with the old across several days.
• A complete food — no supplementation is needed alongside it.
• Fresh drinking water at all times.
