Working 23 sits in the middle of Skinner's Field & Trial range and is the food most working dogs actually live on: 23% protein and 10% fat, enough to carry a gundog through a shooting season without being so rich that the dog cannot settle in the back of the truck. The number in the name is the protein figure, which makes the range easy to move up and down as a dog's workload changes.

It is a cereal-based food — wheat, maize, naked oats and rice, with meat and bone meal and poultry fat — and Skinner's put the metabolisable energy at 343 kcal per 100g. The 15kg sack is the working size; Skinner's also bag it at 2.5kg.

• It is an energy-dense working ration. A dog kept on it out of season, without the work to match, will put on weight.
