Sundown Yellow Chopped Rapeseed Straw Bedding – 19kg
Sundown Yellow is chopped British rapeseed straw, a by-product of the oilseed harvest and the hardest-wearing of Sundown's three chopped straw bales. Rape stem is coarser and more pithy than wheat, which is exactly why it works here: it does not flatten to a mat as quickly, and the pith takes up moisture that wheat straw would simply pass through to the floor.
It runs through the same double vacuum de-dusting and gets the same food-grade eucalyptus fragrance at baling. Priced between the wheat straw and the miscanthus, it is the sensible middle option for a horse that is hard on a bed without being a genuine swamp. Like the rest of the range it is BETA NOPS approved.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Pithy rapeseed stem absorbs more and lasts longer than wheat straw.
- The toughest of Sundown's chopped straw beddings — it holds its structure under a heavy horse.
- Double vacuum de-dusted, so dust is very low for both horse and handler.
- Food-grade eucalyptus fragrance added during baling.
- British-grown, from a crop already being harvested for oil.
- Composts quickly and suits banked or flat bedding systems.
- BETA NOPS approved for competition yards.
Suitable For
- Horses that are hard on a bed, or stables that run damp.
- Owners wanting more life out of a bale than wheat straw gives.
- Horses and handlers with dust sensitivities.
- Banked or flat bedding systems in standard loose boxes.
- Not the most absorbent bale here — for a genuinely wet horse Sundown Purple miscanthus holds more again.
How to Use
- Lay a new bed with 4–5 bales in a 12ft x 12ft stable.
- Top up with 1–2 bales a week, depending on use and bed depth.
- Skip out daily and turn the bed so the base dries.
- Store under cover — the LDPE wrap is weatherproof but not meant for long-term outdoor storage.
