Supreme Science Selective Guinea Pig Food – 1.5kg
Guinea pigs are one of the handful of mammals that cannot make their own vitamin C, so it has to arrive in the diet every day or the animal slides into deficiency. Supreme put 800mg per kilogram into this nugget, which is the single most important thing on the label.
The rest is a single-component nugget at 16% protein and 15% crude fibre, built on alfalfa meal and wheat with linseeds, dried fennel and dried dandelion. Because every nugget is identical there is nothing to pick over, which is what stops a guinea pig eating the parts it likes and leaving the parts that carry the vitamins.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Stabilised vitamin C at 800mg per kilogram — the reason a guinea pig food is a guinea pig food and not a rabbit one.
- Crude fibre 15%, which keeps the gut moving and the constantly growing teeth wearing down.
- Single-component nuggets, so selective feeding is impossible.
- Linseeds supply omega 3; dried fennel and dried dandelion are in the mix as Supreme list them.
- Prebiotics (MOS) included in the composition.
- 1.5kg bag, about a month for one adult pig at Supreme's own rate.
Suitable For
- Adult guinea pigs of all breeds, as the concentrate part of the diet.
- One or two pigs, where a bag is used up before the vitamin C has had time to degrade.
- Guinea pigs moving off a muesli mix, where selective feeding has been a problem.
- Not a rabbit food — rabbits make their own vitamin C and need a different fibre and calcium profile, so use Supreme's Science Selective Adult Rabbit or House Rabbit instead.
Feeding
- Supreme's rate: an average adult guinea pig needs 40–50g a day of Selective Guinea Pig.
- Feed fresh vegetables alongside it, with good quality hay and clean drinking water.
- Hay, not nuggets, should be the bulk of what a guinea pig eats.
- Change over from another food gradually across a week or so; guinea pig guts do not take sudden switches well.
- Reseal the bag and use it within a reasonable time — vitamin C is the part that fades first.
