Tequila Mala Vida is the brand of Alex González, drummer for the Mexican rock band Maná, who was born in Miami, moved to Guadalajara at fifteen, and after three decades of touring and struggling to find decent tequila abroad launched his own line in 2016 to export the culture of Jalisco. The bottle is topped with a skull, González's nod to Día de Muertos, and the line is kosher and non-GMO certified. The tequila is produced at NOM 1588 in the southern Los Altos highlands of Jalisco from 100% blue Weber agave: the piñas are cooked in a low-pressure autoclave, crushed on a roller mill, and fermented in stainless steel tanks with the fibers removed and classical music playing in the room, then distilled twice in a stainless steel pot still and proofed with natural spring water. The blanco is the unaged expression, the one that shows the highland agave without the French and American oak the reposado and añejo pick up. Mala Vida does not publish formal tasting notes for the blanco, so what you get is clean highland agave in a bottle that gets noticed.
